I have learned now that with any volunteer experience, you have to go into it with the right perspective. My students need a volunteer that does not see them as victims, but rather they need someone who challenges them to be victimless. I saw in the seventh grades resolutions that they have summited the highest peaks. They will face their obstacles head on with hands of steel because the children at Shanti Bhavan are not only conquering mountains, but one day they’ll move mountains.

I realize that one doesn’t always read a newspaper for a pick-me-up. It’s hardly a safe choice for those who need to be comforted, but it is a great tool for warming up your thought processes first thing in the morning. And it did get me thinking: What can a young person actually do to affect the policies featured in newspapers?
